Infrastructure / Virtualisation

  • 'Xen' — Older paravirtualisation hypervisor. Being migrated to KVM. Xen config files live in xm/ and xmconfig/.
  • 'KVM' — Kernel-based Virtual Machine. The newer hypervisor replacing Xen. Uses QEMU for userland emulation.
  • 'QEMU' — Virtual machine emulator. Used with KVM for userland VM management. Firmware files in ovmf/ (UEFI).
  • 'OVMF' — Open Virtual Machine Firmware. UEFI firmware for KVM VMs.
  • 'netns' — Linux network namespaces. Used to isolate network stacks per VPS guest.
  • 'IPMI' — Intelligent Platform Management Interface. Out-of-band hardware management for physical hosts.
  • 'NDP' — Neighbour Discovery Protocol. IPv6 equivalent of ARP.
  • 'BIRD' — Dynamic routing daemon (BGP/OSPF). Used in the dynamic-routing project.
  • 'EBGP' — External Border Gateway Protocol. Used for provider peering on compute hosts.

Compute Host

  • 'HostDaemon' — Main .NET daemon running on each compute host. Receives commands from the web API and manages VPS lifecycle (start/stop/migrate/network).
  • 'qemu-network/mammothvps.sh' — Shell script that applies iptables firewall rules to compute hosts using claim_lock to serialise changes across all guests on a host.
  • 'routed' — Routing daemon on compute hosts that manages BGP peering and routes.
  • 'smtbalance' — SMTP load balancer that distributes email traffic across mail servers.
  • 'xm/' — Xen configuration tools (older platform, being phased out).
  • 'xm-for-kvm/' — Xen-to-KVM migration tooling.

Application / Codebase

  • 'MonoRail' — Mono's MVC web framework. Used by ClassicPanel (legacy WebForms panel).
  • 'Castle' — Castle Project framework. The original .NET framework the VPS was built on top of. Castle Core, Facilities, Components.
  • 'ASP.NET Core' — Modern .NET web framework. Used for the new AdminSite and WebApi.
  • 'NHibernate (NH)' — Object-relational mapper used in the .NET stack.
  • 'Log4Net' — Logging framework used throughout the .NET codebase.
  • 'MammothVps' — Namespace/project for the Mammoth-specific VPS code.
  • 'Vmbuilder' — Tool for building VM disk images.

Operations / Internal Tools

  • 'Butler' — Internal bot (project 50). Used for automation and team communication.
  • 'Tron' — Job scheduler for internal ops tasks.
  • 'Morbo' — Service health check application (.NET).
  • 'Ansible' — Infrastructure automation. Playbooks in ops/ansible/.
  • 'Icinga' — Monitoring system.
  • 'CICD' — Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment pipeline configuration.

Business / Platform

  • 'VPS' — Virtual Private Server. The core product.
  • 'Mpay' — Payment processing system (project 9). Handles billing, card updates.
  • 'Dynamic_RS' — Dynamic reservation logic (project 61). Manages resource reservation.
  • 'Bootstrap' — Host provisioning system (project 34).
  • 'Backup / BackupProxy' — Backup host programs and download proxy.
  • 'Looking-Glass' — Network diagnostic tool for customers (BGP/traceroute).
  • 'Router' — Router configurations and scripts (project 31).
  • 'GBMT' — Game/BM tooling (infrastructure/gbmt/).
  • 'Neigh-Proxy' — NDP/ARP proxy for VMs (infrastructure/neigh-proxy/).
  • 'Isobuilder' — ISO/image builder for host provisioning.

Architecture Patterns

  • 'CQRS' — Command Query Responsibility Segregation. Used for separating read/write paths.
  • 'REST API' — WebApi project exposes REST endpoints.
  • 'SPA' — Single Page Application (frontend).
  • 'Docker' — Containerisation used in some ops tooling.
